Med Sled® was recently able to facilitate an emergency evacuation “Train the Trainer” review session for school nurses of the Hazelwood School District (HSD), which is one of the largest districts in Missouri with nearly 18,000 students. The session, which took place on Friday, October 11, at Hazelwood East Early Childhood Center, was part of the district’s effort to review and enhance its school crisis management plans in preparation for America’s Safe Schools Week, which took place October 21 – 25.
During the session, representatives from Med Sled® provided a hands-on evacuation training session that addressed horizontal and veritcal evacuation down stairwells using the Med Sled® Evacuation Sled exclusively for grades K – 12. The school nurses, who are responsible for training other district administration and staff, were allowed to ask questions and interact with a live test subject in order to review how to effectively use Med Sleds to evacuate students in the event of an emergency.
“Ensuring the safety of our students and staff is HSD’s number one priority,” said Crystal Nelson, Director of Health Services for the Hazelwood School District. “We take all safety training and preparations seriously and are thrilled to partner with Med Sled® to provide additional training for our staff on this vital piece of equipment. Being proactively ready for an emergency evacuation is our most valuable asset.”
In the months following America’s Safe Schools Week, Med Sled® continues to urge school districts, colleges and universities to review their crisis management plans and make the necessary changes to ensure that all children, mobile and immobile, are included safely in evacuation procedures and that proper equipment to do so exists.
